Cups to Grams by Ingredient Converter
Convert US cups to grams for the ingredient you are actually measuring — flour, sugar, butter and more each have their own weight per cup.
How it works
Grams = cups × grams-per-cup · Ounces = grams ÷ 28.35 · Tablespoons = cups × 16
A cup is a fixed volume, but the same cup holds very different weights depending on the ingredient — 125 g of flour, 200 g of granulated sugar or 340 g of honey. That is why a single "cup to gram" number is wrong for baking; each ingredient needs its own density. This converter multiplies your cup amount by a published grams-per-cup figure so the weight matches what is actually in the cup.
Worked example
You need 2 cups of all-purpose flour in grams. Flour is about 125 g per cup, so 2 × 125 = 250 g, which is roughly 250 ÷ 28.35 = 8.8 ounces.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn’t there one cups-to-grams number?
Because cups measure volume and grams measure weight, and every ingredient has a different density. One cup weighs 125 g as flour, 200 g as sugar and 227 g as butter, so the conversion has to depend on what you are measuring.
Which cup does this use?
The US customary cup of about 237 ml. A metric or Australian cup is 250 ml, so weights would come out a few percent higher if your recipe uses one of those.
Does how I pack the cup matter?
For dry goods, yes — especially flour, where scooping and packing can change the weight by 20% or more. The densities here assume the spoon-and-level method; weigh directly when accuracy is critical.
