How it works

total mg = 95×coffee + 63×espresso + 47×tea + 80×energy + 34×soda

Caffeine content varies by brew and brand, but typical figures are about 95 mg per 8 oz cup of coffee, 63 mg per espresso shot, 47 mg per cup of tea, 80 mg per small energy drink and 34 mg per soda. Summing your daily drinks and comparing to the FDA reference of roughly 400 mg a day for healthy adults shows whether you are in a usual range. Sensitivity differs a lot between people, and pregnancy, medications and heart conditions lower the safe amount considerably.

Worked example

Two coffees (190 mg), one espresso (63 mg) and one tea (47 mg) total 300 mg — about 75% of the 400 mg adult reference.

Frequently asked questions

How much caffeine is too much?

The FDA cites up to about 400 mg a day as not generally linked to harm in healthy adults — roughly four cups of coffee. Higher intakes can cause jitteriness, insomnia and a racing heart.

Is the limit the same during pregnancy?

No. Guidance for pregnancy is much lower, commonly around 200 mg a day. Anyone pregnant or with a heart condition should check with their doctor.

Why is my drink not on the list?

Use the closest category and adjust the count — a large or specialty drink may hold two or three "cups" worth. Actual content varies widely by size and brand.
