How it works
Grams = calories × percent ÷ 4 (sugar has 4 kcal per gram)
The WHO advises keeping added sugar under 10% of calories, and ideally under 5%. Since sugar has 4 calories per gram, converting the percentage to grams shows a concrete daily ceiling.
Worked example
On 2,000 calories, 10% is 50 g of added sugar; the 5% ideal is 25 g.
Frequently asked questions
Does fruit count?
Whole fruit sugar is not "added sugar" and is not the target — the limit is for sugar added to foods and drinks.
How much is in a soda?
A single 355 mL can often has around 35–40 g — most of a day’s limit in one drink.
