How it works

Daily rate = used ÷ days elapsed · Projected usage = daily rate × cycle length · Safe daily budget = (cap − used) ÷ days remaining

This projects your full-cycle usage by taking your average daily rate so far and extending it across the whole billing period. It also works backwards from the data you have left: dividing the remaining allowance by the days remaining gives the daily budget that keeps you exactly at the cap. If your recent habits differ from the cycle average — a big download, or travel — the linear projection will lag reality, so recompute as the cycle progresses.

Worked example

A 1,000 GB cap with 300 GB used after 10 days of a 30-day cycle is 30 GB/day. Extended to 30 days that projects to 900 GB — 100 GB under the cap. To be safe you could use up to (1,000 − 300) ÷ 20 = 35 GB/day for the remaining 20 days.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the forecast?

It assumes your future daily usage matches your average so far this cycle. That is reasonable for steady habits, but a single large download or a change in routine can move the real total well above or below the straight-line projection.

What happens if I go over my cap?

It depends on the provider: some throttle your speed for the rest of the cycle, others charge overage fees per gigabyte, and a few simply cut off service. Check your plan's specific policy so you know the cost of the projected overage.

How can I stay under the cap?

Keep daily use below the "safe daily budget" shown here. Lowering streaming quality, pausing large cloud backups and downloading over Wi-Fi where a separate cap applies are the biggest levers.
