How it works

nth Sunday of a month = first day + ((7 − weekday of the 1st) mod 7) + 7·(n − 1) · last Sunday = last day − weekday of the last day · US/Canada: 2nd Sunday of March → 1st Sunday of November · EU/UK: last Sunday of March → last Sunday of October at 01:00 UTC · Southern Hemisphere: starts in Sep/Oct, ends in April

Daylight saving time (summer time) moves clocks one hour forward in spring so that evenings stay light longer, and back in autumn. Each country fixes its rule by law: the US Energy Policy Act of 2005 set the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November from 2007, the EU summer-time directive sets the last Sundays of March and October, and Southern Hemisphere countries change in the opposite seasons. Most of Latin America (Mexico since 2022, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay since 2024) and much of Asia and Africa do not use DST at all. The dates follow the rules in force today; governments occasionally change them at short notice.

Worked example

In the United States and Canada in 2027 the clocks go forward on Sunday, March 14, 2027 at 2:00 a.m. (to 3:00) and go back on Sunday, November 7, 2027 at 2:00 a.m. (to 1:00): 238 days on daylight saving time.

Frequently asked questions

When does daylight saving time start in 2027?

In the US and Canada on Sunday, March 14, 2027; in the EU and UK on Sunday, March 28, 2027. It ends on November 7 (US) and October 31 (Europe).

Do I lose or gain an hour?

"Spring forward, fall back": in spring the clock jumps from 2:00 to 3:00, so the night is one hour shorter; in autumn 2:00 becomes 1:00 again and you gain an hour.

Does Mexico still change the clocks?

No. Mexico abolished daylight saving time in 2022, except municipalities along the US border, which follow US dates. Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and (since 2024) Paraguay do not change their clocks either.

Is daylight saving time being abolished?

It has been debated: the European Parliament voted in 2019 to end clock changes and the US Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, but neither became law, so the current rules still apply.
