Decimal Hours to Time Calculator
Convert decimal hours to hours-and-minutes, or hours-and-minutes back to a decimal — both directions.
How it works
decimal → minutes = fraction × 60 · hours & minutes → decimal = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Decimal hours and hours-and-minutes measure the same time in two notations, and the fix is the 60-minute hour. To go from decimal, multiply the fractional part by 60: 0.75 h is 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. To go back, divide minutes by 60 and add the whole hours: 2 h 45 m is 2 + 45/60 = 2.75. Confusing 2.45 with 2 h 45 m is a classic timesheet error this conversion removes.
Worked example
2.75 decimal hours: the 0.75 fractional part is 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, giving 2 h 45 m. Going the other way, 2 h 45 m is 2 + 45 ÷ 60 = 2.75 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 2.5 hours not 2 hours 5 minutes?
Because the decimal part is a fraction of an hour, not minutes. 0.5 of an hour is 30 minutes, so 2.5 hours is 2 h 30 m. Only ÷ 60 or × 60 converts correctly.
What are common decimal-minute values?
15 min = 0.25, 20 min = 0.333…, 30 min = 0.5, 40 min = 0.667…, 45 min = 0.75. Payroll rounds to two or four decimals depending on the system.
Which direction does payroll need?
Usually hours-and-minutes to decimal, because pay = rate × decimal hours. Enter your clocked hours and minutes to get the decimal figure to multiply.
