Decimal to Fraction Converter
Turn a terminating decimal into an exact fraction in lowest terms, with the reduction shown.
How it works
Fraction = round(decimal × 10ⁿ) / 10ⁿ, then divide top and bottom by their gcd (n = decimal places)
A terminating decimal is already a fraction with a power-of-ten denominator: 0.75 is 75/100. Writing it that way and then dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor produces the fraction in lowest terms. This tool handles decimals up to twelve places; genuinely repeating decimals need a different method.
Worked example
0.75 has two decimal places, so it is 75/100. The GCF of 75 and 100 is 25, and dividing both by 25 gives 3/4.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a decimal to a fraction by hand?
Write the decimal over a 1 followed by as many zeros as there are decimal places, then simplify. 0.75 becomes 75/100, which reduces to 3/4.
Does this work for repeating decimals?
Not exactly. A repeating decimal like 0.333… is 1/3, but converting it requires an algebraic method. This tool treats the input as a terminating decimal.
What is "lowest terms"?
A fraction is in lowest terms when its numerator and denominator share no common factor above 1, so it cannot be simplified further.
