Fraction to Decimal Converter
Convert any fraction to its decimal and percentage value by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
How it works
Decimal = Numerator ÷ Denominator · Percentage = Decimal × 100
A fraction is a division waiting to happen: the bar between numerator and denominator means "divide". Carrying out that division gives the decimal form, and multiplying by 100 turns it into a percentage. Some fractions terminate (3/8 = 0.375) while others repeat (1/3 = 0.333…), depending on the denominator.
Worked example
3/8 means 3 ÷ 8. Performing the division gives 0.375, which is the same as 37.5%.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some fractions give repeating decimals?
A fraction terminates only when its reduced denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. Any other factor — like the 3 in 1/3 — produces a repeating decimal.
How do I convert the decimal to a percentage?
Multiply the decimal by 100 and add a percent sign. 0.375 becomes 37.5%.
What happens if the denominator is zero?
Division by zero is undefined, so a fraction with a zero denominator has no value. Enter a non-zero denominator.
