How it works

Balusters n = round[(length − gap) ÷ (baluster width + gap)] · Actual gap = (length − n × baluster width) ÷ (n + 1)

Between two posts you always have one more gap than you have balusters, so the count comes from dividing the run (minus one opening) by the width of a baluster plus a gap. Rounding to a whole number then shifts the spacing slightly, so recompute the actual gap and confirm it stays below the 4-inch limit — the guardrail rule that a 4-inch sphere must not pass through, to keep small children safe. If the gap creeps over, add one baluster and the spacing tightens.

Worked example

A 20 ft (240 in) rail with 1.5″ balusters and a 3.5″ target gap fits round[(240 − 3.5) ÷ 5] = 47 balusters. The real even gap becomes (240 − 47 × 1.5) ÷ 48 = 3.53 in — comfortably under the 4-inch code limit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum gap between deck balusters?

Residential code requires that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass between balusters, so the clear gap must stay under 4 inches. This calculator flags any spacing that would exceed it.

Why does my gap change after rounding?

You can only install whole balusters, so once the raw count is rounded the leftover space is redistributed evenly across all the gaps. That is why the tool recomputes the actual gap rather than assuming your target.

Does this count per section or the whole rail?

Enter one railing section between posts for the most accurate even spacing. For a long deck with several sections, run each span separately so every section gets its own balanced layout.
