How it works

Counter length = grill + fridge + sink + prep zone + 2 × landing space

A comfortable outdoor kitchen is not just the width of the grill — it is the appliances plus the landing zones you need to set down hot food and tools safely. Kitchen-design guidelines call for a heat-resistant landing area of at least 12–18 inches on each side of a grill or cooktop, plus a dedicated prep zone away from the flames. Add the widths together, then round up to a standard cabinet or countertop size.

Worked example

A 36″ grill, 24″ fridge and 15″ sink, with a 36″ prep zone and 18″ of landing on each side, total 36 + 24 + 15 + 36 + 36 = 147 in — about 12.3 ft of counter.

Frequently asked questions

How much landing space does a built-in grill need?

Plan for at least 12 inches of heat-safe counter on one side and ideally 18 inches on both sides of the grill, so you have somewhere to rest platters, tools and lids without reaching over the fire.

What is a comfortable prep-zone width?

A single-cook prep zone works at about 24 inches, but 36 inches is far more comfortable and lets two people work. If you also cut and plate, treat this as the minimum open run, not counting appliances.

Should I add counter overhang for seating?

If the counter doubles as a bar, add a raised or extended top with about 24 inches of width and 12 inches of overhang per stool — that seating length is on top of the working counter estimated here.
