Patio Paver Quantity Calculator
Find exactly how many pavers you need for a patio from its size, your paver dimensions and a cutting-waste allowance.
How it works
Pavers = ⌈(patio area ÷ paver area) × (1 + waste%)⌉ · paver area (sq ft) = length × width ÷ 144
Divide the total patio area by the footprint of a single paver to get the raw count, then add a waste allowance because edge and border rows almost always require cuts. Ten percent is typical for a simple running-bond field; herringbone and 45° layouts waste more because every perimeter piece is a diagonal cut. Always round up and keep a few spares — dye lots vary between deliveries.
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft patio is 120 sq ft. A 12″ × 6″ paver covers 72 ÷ 144 = 0.5 sq ft, so the field needs 240 pavers. Adding 10% for cuts gives 264 pavers.
Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I add for pavers?
Add about 5% for a straight running-bond or stack-bond pattern, 10% for most layouts, and up to 15% for herringbone, pinwheel or any 45° diagonal design where every edge piece must be cut.
Does this include the sand and base?
No — this counts only the pavers themselves. Below them you also need a compacted gravel base (typically 4–6 inches) and about a 1-inch bedding-sand layer, which are estimated by volume rather than by piece.
Should I buy extra pavers?
Yes. Keep at least a handful of spares from the same batch. Paver colors are blended in production and a later delivery can be a visibly different shade, so matching a cracked stone years later is hard.
