Paver Calculator
Find how many pavers you need for a patio or walkway from the area and the paver size, with waste included.
How it works
pavers = ceil(area × 1.05 ÷ paver area) · paver area (sq ft) = (length ÷ 12) × (width ÷ 12)
Convert the paver size to square feet, divide the patio area by it, and round up, adding 5% for cuts and breakage — patios use less waste than tiled floors because pavers cut cleanly and edges are often soldier-coursed. The real work is underneath: a compacted gravel base and a screeded sand bed determine whether the patio stays flat.
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft patio is 120 sq ft. With 8 × 4 in pavers (0.222 sq ft each): 120 × 1.05 ÷ 0.222 ≈ 567 pavers.
Frequently asked questions
How much base do I need under pavers?
Typically 4–6 in of compacted crushed stone under 1 in of bedding sand for a patio, and 8–12 in of base for a driveway. Compact the base in lifts — skimping here is the number-one cause of sunken, wavy pavers.
How much waste for a paver patio?
Five percent for a simple straight or running-bond layout, closer to 10% for herringbone, circular or diagonal patterns that force more cuts. Save a few whole pavers for future repairs.
Do I need edge restraints?
Yes — without a spiked or concrete edge restraint, the perimeter pavers creep outward and the whole field loosens over time. It is a small cost that protects the entire installation.
