Density, Mass & Volume Calculator
Solve for density, mass or volume from the other two, with results in SI and common units.
How it works
ρ = m/V · m = ρ·V · V = m/ρ
Density is mass packed into a given volume, ρ = m/V, and the same relation rearranges to find mass or volume from the other two. It tells you how heavy a material is for its size and whether it floats: anything less dense than water (1000 kg/m³, or 1 g/cm³) floats in it. Because it is an intrinsic property, a small chip of a material has the same density as a large block.
Worked example
A 2 kg object occupying 0.0025 m³ has density ρ = 2 / 0.0025 = 800 kg/m³, or 0.8 g/cm³. That is less than water’s 1000 kg/m³, so it floats.

Frequently asked questions
What is the density of water?
Fresh water is about 1000 kg/m³, equal to 1 g/cm³ or 1 kg per litre, at 4 °C. Materials denser than this sink in water; lighter ones float, which is the basis of the “relative to water” figure shown.
How do I convert kg/m³ to g/cm³?
Divide by 1000. So 800 kg/m³ is 0.8 g/cm³. The g/cm³ figure is numerically the same as specific gravity relative to water.
Does temperature affect density?
Yes. Most materials expand when heated, spreading the same mass over more volume and lowering density. The effect is small for solids and liquids but large for gases, so quoted densities specify a temperature.
