How it works

the sum distribution comes from convolving each die’s uniform 1…s outcomes · P(exact) = ways to make the total ÷ sⁿ · average = n × (s + 1) ÷ 2

When you roll several dice, the possible totals are not equally likely — middle sums have many more combinations than the extremes, which is why 7 dominates on two six-sided dice. This calculator builds the full probability distribution by combining the dice one at a time, then reads off the chance of your exact target, the chance of that total or higher, and that total or lower. The most likely sum and the average round out the picture.

Worked example

With two six-sided dice, a total of 7 can be made 6 ways (1-6, 2-5, 3-4 and their reverses) out of 36 equally likely rolls, so its probability is 6 ÷ 36 = 16.67% — the single most likely total, matching the average of 7.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 7 the best bet on two dice?

Because more combinations add up to 7 than to any other total — six ways, versus just one way each for 2 or 12. More combinations mean a higher probability.

Can I use non-standard dice?

Yes — set any number of sides from 2 up (like d4, d10 or d20) and up to 12 dice. The odds recompute for that exact combination.

What if my target is impossible?

If the target is below the minimum or above the maximum the dice can reach, the exact chance is 0 and a note flags that it is outside the possible range.
