Dog Water Intake Calculator
How much water should a dog drink per day? Calculate the normal range from body weight, life stage (puppy, adult, senior, pregnant, nursing), diet, activity and weather, in millilitres, cups, fluid ounces and bowl refills — compare it with the 1 oz per pound and veterinary maintenance rules, and check what your dog actually drinks against the vet threshold.
How it works
total water = 50–60 mL × kg per day (puppies 70–90, late pregnancy ≈ 62–90, nursing ≈ 2–3× adult) + 20–40 mL/kg for hard exercise, + 5–15 mL/kg at 25 °C and + 15–30 mL/kg above 30 °C · water to drink = total − water in food (wet food ≈ 75% water) · > 100 mL/kg/day = polydipsia · comparisons: 1 fl oz per lb (≈ 66 mL/kg) and 132 × kg^0.75 mL/day (veterinary maintenance)
A dog’s water turnover is set by its metabolic rate and by what it loses through urine, breath and panting. Under ordinary conditions it scales with body weight at about 50 to 60 millilitres per kilogram a day. Food contributes: kibble is nearly dry, so kibble-fed dogs drink almost all their water, while a wet or raw diet is three-quarters water and cuts bowl drinking sharply. That is why two healthy dogs can drink very different amounts. Heat and exercise raise the figure, sometimes to double, because panting is a dog’s main way of cooling down. Life stage matters too. Puppies need more per kilogram. Water needs follow energy needs, which rise in the last weeks of pregnancy and climb steeply while a mother is nursing. The calculator also shows the simpler 1 fl oz per pound rule and the maintenance formula vets use for fluid therapy, 132 × kg^0.75. They agree closely for medium dogs, but the ¾-power formula gives relatively more to small dogs and less to giant ones. The most useful number is the upper limit. Drinking more than about 100 mL/kg a day for several days (some vets use 90) is called polydipsia. It is an early, easily measured sign of diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing’s disease, pyometra and other problems.
Worked example
A 20 kg (44 lb) adult dog on kibble with normal walks at 22 °C needs about 1,000–1,200 mL a day: 4.2–5 cups, or 34–41 fl oz. That is roughly 1.6 fills of a 750 mL bowl. The 1 fl oz per pound rule gives 1,304 mL, and the veterinary maintenance formula 132 × 20^0.75 gives 1,248 mL, so the methods agree within about 25%. If the same dog were raw-fed, about 500 mL would come from the food and it would drink only 500–700 mL. Drinking more than 2,000 mL a day (100 mL/kg) for several days would be a reason to see the vet. If the dog were nursing a litter, the total would rise to about 2,000–3,600 mL.

Frequently asked questions
How much water should a dog drink a day?
Most healthy adult dogs need about 50–60 mL per kilogram of body weight a day in total, roughly 1 fluid ounce per pound. A 10 kg (22 lb) dog needs about 500–600 mL (2–2.5 cups). Dogs on wet or raw food drink less from the bowl, while hot weather, exercise, puppies and nursing mothers need more.
How do I measure what my dog drinks?
Fill the bowl from a measuring jug, note the amount, and measure what is left each time you refresh it for 2–3 days; average the daily difference. Account for other dogs, cats and outdoor sources.
When is my dog drinking too much?
When it drinks more than about 100 mL per kg a day for several days, for example more than 2 litres for a 20 kg dog. Some vets use 90 mL/kg. This is called polydipsia and can point to diabetes, kidney or liver disease, Cushing’s disease, a womb infection (pyometra) or a side effect of drugs such as steroids. Enter what your dog drank and the calculator compares it with the threshold.
Should I limit water at night?
Not for adult dogs — restricting water risks dehydration and urinary problems. For house-training puppies, pick the bowl up about 2 hours before bed but always offer water on request.
How much water does a nursing dog need?
Much more than usual: her energy and water needs climb with the size of the litter and peak about 3–4 weeks after birth, often at 2–3 times her normal intake. Keep several full bowls within reach of the whelping area.
