Dropshipping Margin Calculator
Calculate the real profit and margin on a dropshipped order after supplier cost, payment processing fees and the ad spend it takes to win each customer.
How it works
Net profit = price − supplier cost − (processing% × price + fixed) − ad cost per order · Margin = profit ÷ price × 100
In dropshipping you never hold stock, so the supplier cost already bundles the product and its shipping, but the two costs that quietly sink margins are payment processing and paid advertising. Because you pay to acquire almost every order, the cost per acquisition behaves like a variable cost on each sale, not a one-off. A store can look profitable on gross margin and still lose money once the ad cost per order is subtracted.
Worked example
On a $30 sale with a $12 supplier cost, 2.9% + $0.30 processing ($1.17) and a $6 ad cost per order, profit is 30 − 12 − 1.17 − 6 = $10.83, a 36.1% margin. If the cost per acquisition climbs to $14, the same order barely breaks even.
Frequently asked questions
Should ad cost be per order or total ad spend?
Use the cost per order (total ad spend divided by the number of orders those ads produced, also called CPA). That turns advertising into a per-sale figure you can subtract from each order, which is how it actually behaves in a paid-traffic dropshipping model.
Why include payment processing when it seems small?
A 2.9% + $0.30 fee is minor on a $200 order but meaningful on a $15 one, where the fixed portion alone is 2% of the sale. On low-ticket dropshipping products the fixed fee can quietly consume a large slice of a thin margin.
What is a healthy dropshipping margin after ads?
Many operators aim for a net margin of 15–30% after supplier cost, processing and advertising. Below that, small swings in ad cost or supplier price can flip orders to a loss, so a thin margin leaves little room for refunds, disputes or rising CPAs.
