How it works

Win rate = wins ÷ (wins + losses) · Net wins per game = 2 × win rate − 1 · Games to rank up = net wins needed ÷ net per game

Ranked ladders reward net wins — most systems gain you roughly as much for a win as they take for a loss, so only the surplus of wins over losses moves your rank. Your expected net progress per game is 2·(win rate) − 1, which is zero at exactly 50% and negative below it. That is why a sub-50% win rate leaves you stuck no matter how many games you grind: without a real edge, wins and losses cancel out.

Worked example

With 55 wins and 45 losses your win rate is 55%. Net per game = 2 × 0.55 − 1 = 0.10, so to gain 10 net wins for the next rank you need about 10 ÷ 0.10 = 100 more games.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I climb at a 50% win rate?

At exactly 50% each win is cancelled by a loss, so your net progress per game is zero. Ranked systems are built so that only players who win more than they lose gain ground over time.

Does a higher win rate climb much faster?

Dramatically. Net progress is 2·(win rate) − 1, so going from 55% to 60% doubles your net-per-game from 0.10 to 0.20 — halving the games needed to rank up.

Is “net wins needed” the same in every game?

No. Each title uses its own points-per-win and division sizes, so set this to your game’s equivalent of the surplus wins required to cross into the next rank.
