FASTag Toll Cost Calculator 2026: Trip Toll, Return Discount, UPI/Cash Charges and Annual Pass

Estimate highway tolls for a trip in India from the tolled distance or the plaza fees you look up, by vehicle class: return-within-24-hours discount, what you pay without a valid FASTag (1.25× by UPI, 2× in cash), toll versus fuel cost, and whether the FASTag annual pass (₹3,075 for 200 crossings or one year from April 2026) pays off for your yearly crossings.

How it works

Distance estimate: toll ≈ (NH km × car NH rate + expressway km × car expressway rate) × class factor (car 1, LCV 1.6, bus/truck 3.4, 3-axle 3.7, 4–6 axle 5.3) · Return within 24 h = 1.5 × single fee on NH plazas · Without valid FASTag: UPI 1.25 ×, cash 2 × · Fuel = km ÷ km/L × price · Annual pass saving = crossings × average plaza fee − pass price; break-even = pass price ÷ average plaza fee

National highway tolls in India are notified plaza by plaza under the National Highways Fee Rules: a per-kilometre base rate for each vehicle class multiplied by the length of the section the plaza covers, with extra for costly structures such as bridges and tunnels, revised every 1 April. Open-tolling NH plazas charge the whole section between plazas wherever you join; closed-tolling expressways charge by entry and exit. If you know the plaza fees (from the NHAI Rajmarg Yatra app or the NHTIS list), enter them for an exact total. Otherwise the calculator estimates from the tolled distance at average car rates per kilometre, scaled by the ratio between vehicle classes in the fee rules, and assumes one plaza about every 60 km of highway. A return through the same plaza within 24 hours costs 1.5 times the single fee on NH plazas, so the return leg is half price. Without a valid FASTag you pay 1.25 times the fee by UPI or twice the fee in cash (rule in force since 15 November 2025; NH plazas have run on digital payment since 10 April 2026). The FASTag annual pass, launched on 15 August 2025 for non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans, covers 200 plaza crossings or one year at about 1,150 NH and national expressway plazas. It costs ₹3,075 for FY 2026-27 (₹3,000 at launch), about ₹15 a crossing, so it pays off when your yearly crossings times the average plaza fee is more than the pass price. State highway and private toll roads are not covered.

Worked example

With the defaults, a car travelling 420 km on national highways and 95 km on an expressway: toll ≈ (420 × ₹2.15 + 95 × ₹2.90) × 1 = ₹903 + ₹275.50 = ₹1,179 one way with a FASTag, through about 8 plazas (420 ÷ 60 = 7, plus 1 for the expressway), averaging ₹147 each. Without a valid FASTag it would be ₹1,473 by UPI or ₹2,357 in cash. Fuel for 515 km at 15 km/L and ₹104/L is ₹3,571, so the trip costs ₹4,749 and tolls are 25% of it. At 120 crossings a year the pay-per-trip cost would be 120 × ₹147 = ₹17,678, so the ₹3,075 annual pass saves ₹14,603; it breaks even after 21 crossings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FASTag annual pass price in 2026?

₹3,075 for FY 2026-27, effective 1 April 2026 (it was ₹3,000 when launched on 15 August 2025). It is valid for one year or 200 toll-plaza crossings, whichever comes first, for non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans with a valid FASTag, on about 1,150 national highway and national expressway plazas.

Is the FASTag annual pass worth it?

Divide the pass price by your average plaza fee. With plazas averaging ₹100–150 for a car, the ₹3,075 pass pays off after about 21–31 crossings a year. A daily commuter through one plaza gets there in two or three weeks; someone who drives the highway a few times a year usually does not. State and private toll roads are not covered.

How much is the toll without FASTag?

If your vehicle has no valid, working FASTag, you pay 1.25 times the FASTag fee when paying by UPI, or twice the fee in cash. National highway plazas have moved to digital payment (FASTag or UPI) since 10 April 2026.

How does the return-journey discount work?

On national highway plazas, if you buy a return when you first cross and come back through the same plaza within 24 hours, you pay 1.5 times the single fee instead of twice, so the return leg is half price. FASTag applies it automatically when the return crossing happens in time. Most expressways charge each direction in full.

Why did I pay toll for a section I did not fully use?

Open-tolling NH plazas charge for the whole section the plaza covers, wherever you join or leave. Only closed-tolling expressways charge by actual entry and exit. Residents within 20 km of a plaza can buy a monthly pass for that plaza.

How accurate is the distance estimate?

It is a rough average. Real fees depend on the section, the number of lanes and structures like bridges and tunnels, so two 60 km sections can differ a lot. For an exact figure, look up each plaza's fee for your vehicle class on Rajmarg Yatra or NHTIS and use "Plaza fees I know".
