On-Road Price Calculator (India) — Road Tax by State, Registration, Insurance & TCS
Estimate a car or two-wheeler's on-road price from the ex-showroom price: state road tax (RTO) slabs for Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, West Bengal, Haryana and others, registration and HSRP charges, first-year comprehensive insurance, 1% TCS above ₹10 lakh, FASTag and handling, plus the EV concession and how a second car or diesel changes the tax.
How it works
on-road = ex-showroom + road tax (state % of ex-showroom, by price slab and fuel) + registration & HSRP + 1% TCS (cars > ₹10 L; refundable via ITR) + first-year insurance + FASTag + dealer extras · indicative slabs: MH 11/12/13%, KA 13/14/17/18%, DL 4/7/10%, TN 12/13/18/20%, UP 8/10%, GJ 6%, KL 9–21%; EVs 0% in most states
The number on the poster is ex-showroom; what leaves your account is on-road, and the gap is mostly the state's one-time road tax — a lifetime levy of anywhere from four to twenty percent of the ex-showroom price, itself already inclusive of GST, stepped up by price slab and often by diesel or corporate ownership, and waived for electric vehicles in most states to nudge adoption. Registration, number plates, a first-year insurance policy that dealers routinely overprice, a one-percent tax collected at source on expensive cars that comes back at tax time, and a bundle of negotiable extras make up the rest, so the same car can cost a lakh or two more in one state than its neighbour.
Worked example
A ₹12 lakh petrol car registered in Maharashtra pays 12% road tax — ₹1.44 lakh — plus about ₹2,600 for registration and HSRP, ₹12,000 of TCS (recoverable), around ₹36,000 of first-year insurance, ₹500 FASTag and ₹25,000 of dealer extras: roughly ₹14.2 lakh on-road, 18% over ex-showroom. In Delhi the tax would be 10% (₹1.2 lakh), in Gujarat 6% (₹72,000), in Karnataka 17% (₹2.04 lakh); as an EV the Maharashtra tax would be nil.
Frequently asked questions
Can I register in a cheaper state?
Only if you actually reside or the company is based there — a Gujarat or Puducherry registration for a car used in Bengaluru is an offence and Karnataka RTOs actively catch out-of-state cars used beyond 12 months. The BH series is the legal route for people who move frequently and qualify.
Is TCS on cars a cost?
No. The 1% collected on cars above ₹10 lakh ex-showroom is deposited against your PAN and shows in Form 26AS; you adjust it against your income-tax liability or claim it as a refund when you file. It only hurts your cash flow.
