Flooring Cost Calculator (Laminate / Vinyl)
Work out how many boxes of laminate or vinyl plank flooring a room needs and the total material cost, including waste and underlayment.
How it works
Area = length × width · Buy area = area × (1 + waste%) · Boxes = ⌈buy area ÷ coverage per box⌉ · Cost = boxes × coverage × price + buy area × underlayment price
Laminate and luxury-vinyl plank are sold in boxes that each cover a fixed area, so you round up: half a box still means buying a whole one. Always add a waste allowance for the cut pieces at the ends of rows, then convert that padded area into whole boxes. Underlayment (unless the planks come with it pre-attached) is priced separately per square foot.
Worked example
A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 8% waste that is 194.4 sq ft; at 22 sq ft per box you need ⌈8.84⌉ = 9 boxes (198 sq ft). At $2.50 per sq ft the planks cost $495, and underlayment at $0.40 per sq ft on 194.4 sq ft adds about $78 — roughly $573 in materials.
Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Divide your waste-padded square footage by the coverage printed on each box, then round up to the next whole box. Keep at least one spare plank or partial box for future repairs, since dye lots change between production runs.
Does this cover installation labor?
No — it prices the flooring material and underlayment only. Click-lock laminate and vinyl are common DIY projects; if you hire a pro, add their per-square-foot labor rate on top.
Why add waste for plank flooring?
Every row ends in a cut plank, and the offcut is often too short to reuse. Straight installations lose about 5%, while diagonal layouts or rooms with many angles can waste 10–15%.
