How it works

value in target unit = value × (newtons per source unit) ÷ (newtons per target unit) · 1 kgf = 9.80665 N · 1 lbf = 4.4482216 N · 1 dyn = 10⁻⁵ N

All units are converted through the newton, the force that accelerates 1 kg at 1 m/s². Gravitational units such as the kilogram-force and pound-force are the weight of 1 kg or 1 lb under standard gravity, g₀ = 9.80665 m/s², so 1 kgf = 9.80665 N and 1 lbf = 0.45359237 kg × 9.80665 = 4.4482 N. The dyne is the CGS unit (1 g·cm/s²).

Worked example

100 N ÷ 4.4482216 N per lbf = 22.481 lbf. The same force is 10.197 kgf, the weight of about 10.2 kg.

Frequently asked questions

How many newtons are in a kilogram-force?

1 kgf = 9.80665 N exactly. For quick estimates many engineers use 10 N ≈ 1 kgf.

How do I convert newtons to pounds-force?

Divide by 4.4482: 500 N ÷ 4.4482 = 112.4 lbf. To convert lbf to N multiply by 4.4482.

Is a kilogram a unit of force?

No — the kilogram is mass. The kilogram-force is the weight of a 1 kg mass in standard gravity. Load ratings written “in kg” on hooks or anchors usually mean kgf.

What is a kip?

A kip (kilo-pound) is 1,000 lbf = 4.448 kN, used in US structural engineering for loads on beams and columns.
