Torque Unit Converter (N·m, lb·ft, lb·in, kgf·m)
Convert torque between newton meters, pound-feet (ft-lb), pound-inches (in-lb), kilogram-force meters and centimeters, ounce-inches and kN·m — for torque wrenches, bolts and engines.
How it works
value in target unit = value × (N·m per source unit) ÷ (N·m per target unit) · 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179 N·m · 1 lbf·in = 0.1129848 N·m · 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m
Torque is force times lever arm, so each unit is a force unit multiplied by a length unit, and all are converted through the newton meter. A pound-force foot is 4.4482 N × 0.3048 m = 1.3558 N·m; a pound-force inch is 1/12 of that. Kilogram-force meters (kgf·m, often written kg·m or mkg) still appear in older Japanese and Latin American service manuals.
Worked example
100 lbf·ft × 1.3558179 = 135.582 N·m. The same torque is 1,200 lbf·in or 13.826 kgf·m.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert ft-lb to N·m?
Multiply by 1.3558: 80 ft-lb (lbf·ft) × 1.3558 = 108.5 N·m. To go from N·m to ft-lb, multiply by 0.7376.
How many inch-pounds are in a foot-pound?
Exactly 12. 25 ft-lb = 300 in-lb. Small fasteners and bicycle parts are often specified in in-lb or N·m.
What is kgf·m in N·m?
1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m, so a manual that says 10 kgf·m means 98.1 N·m (72.3 lbf·ft).
Is ft-lb torque the same as ft-lb of energy?
The units look the same but measure different things. For torque the convention is lbf·ft (pound-feet); for work or energy it is ft·lbf (foot-pounds). The numbers convert the same way.
