Garlic Conversion Calculator
Convert garlic cloves to minced garlic, garlic powder, granulated garlic, dried flakes or garlic salt — and back. How much garlic powder equals one clove? Teaspoons, heads and grams included.
How it works
1 medium clove ≈ ½ tsp minced fresh or jarred ≈ ⅛ tsp garlic powder ≈ ¼ tsp granulated garlic ≈ ¼ tsp dried minced flakes ≈ ½ tsp garlic salt ≈ 5 g · 1 head ≈ 10 cloves
Spice makers such as McCormick give these equivalents for one medium fresh clove: ⅛ teaspoon of garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon of granulated garlic or dried minced garlic, and ½ teaspoon of garlic salt (which is about three parts salt to one part garlic, so cut the recipe’s salt). A medium clove weighs about 5 g and gives roughly ½ teaspoon minced; a head usually holds 10–12 cloves. Dried garlic is milder and less pungent than fresh, so many cooks add a little extra and bloom it in oil first.
Worked example
3 medium cloves of garlic = 3 × ⅛ = 0.38 tsp of garlic powder (a scant 3/8 tsp), which is also 0.75 tsp granulated garlic, 1.50 tsp minced garlic or about 15 g fresh.
