How it works

Mean pay gap = (Men’s mean hourly pay − Women’s mean hourly pay) ÷ Men’s mean hourly pay × 100 · Median pay gap = same with medians · Equal Pay Day equivalent = Gap × 365 days

The gender pay gap compares the average hourly pay of all men and all women in an organisation, expressed as a percentage of men’s pay — the definition used by the UK’s gender pay gap reporting regulations, Eurostat and the EU Pay Transparency Directive (2023/970). A positive gap means men earn more on average. It is not the same as unequal pay for equal work: it also reflects who holds senior and better-paid roles, which is why reports show both the mean (sensitive to a few high earners) and the median.

Worked example

Men’s mean hourly pay is $25.00 and women’s $21.50, so the mean gap is (25.00 − 21.50) ÷ 25.00 = 14.00%. With medians of $22.00 and $19.80 the median gap is 10.00%. Women earn 0.86 for every 1.00 men earn on average — at 37.5 hours a week that is $6,825.00 a year — equivalent to working 51 days a year unpaid.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the gender pay gap?

Subtract women’s average hourly pay from men’s, divide by men’s average hourly pay and multiply by 100. With $25.00 and $21.50 the gap is 14%. Do it with the mean and with the median.

What is the difference between the mean and the median pay gap?

The mean uses the average of all hourly pay, so a few very high earners pull it up. The median compares the middle earner in each group and is less affected by extremes; it is the headline figure in many official statistics.

Is the gender pay gap the same as unequal pay?

No. Equal pay means paying men and women the same for the same or equal-value work, which is a legal requirement. The pay gap compares averages across the whole workforce and is mostly driven by differences in roles, seniority and hours.

Why use hourly pay rather than annual salary?

Hourly pay removes the effect of part-time work, which is more common among women. Comparing annual salaries would mix pay differences with differences in hours worked.

What is Equal Pay Day?

The day of the year from which, symbolically, women stop being paid compared with men. A 14% gap equals about 51 days of the year, so in campaigns that count back from the end of the year Equal Pay Day falls around 10 November.
