How it works

generation = the named birth-year band the year falls in — e.g. Millennials 1981–1996, Gen Z 1997–2012, Gen Alpha 2013–2024 (Pew Research and common definitions)

Generations are cohorts defined by ranges of birth years, though the exact boundaries vary slightly between sources. This tool uses widely cited ranges (close to the Pew Research Center’s), from the Greatest and Silent generations through Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, Gen Alpha and the emerging Gen Beta. The cut-off years are conventions, not hard science, so people born within a year or two of a boundary are sometimes called a “cusp” or micro-generation.

Worked example

A birth year of 1990 falls in the 1981–1996 band, making that person a Millennial (Gen Y). In 2026 they turn about 36.

Frequently asked questions

Why do generation years differ between sources?

There is no official standard. Pew Research, Strauss–Howe and various media outlets draw the lines a year or two apart. This calculator uses common, widely referenced ranges, so a borderline year may be labelled differently elsewhere.

What are the current main generations?

Baby Boomers (1946–1964), Generation X (1965–1980), Millennials/Gen Y (1981–1996), Generation Z (1997–2012), Generation Alpha (2013–2024) and the newly named Generation Beta from 2025.

What is a “cusp” generation?

People born within a couple of years of a boundary — such as “Xennials” between Gen X and Millennials, or “Zillennials” between Millennials and Gen Z — who identify with traits of both neighbouring cohorts.
