Gini Coefficient Calculator
Measure inequality in a list of incomes or values — Gini coefficient, Lorenz-curve shares and the top/bottom split.
How it works
G = (n + 1 − 2·Σᵢ cumᵢ ÷ total) ÷ n (values sorted ascending)
The Gini coefficient is twice the area between the Lorenz curve (cumulative share of value vs cumulative share of people) and the line of perfect equality. Sorting the values and summing cumulative totals gives it directly. It is scale-free, so incomes in rupees or dollars give the same result.
Worked example
The default ten incomes give G ≈ 0.53 — similar to a highly unequal country; the top 10% (one person) holds 44% of all income.
Frequently asked questions
What are typical national values?
Roughly 0.25–0.30 for Nordic countries, 0.35–0.45 for the US and India, above 0.55 for South Africa.
Is this the population or sample version?
The plain (population) formula. Multiply by n/(n−1) for the small-sample correction.
