Glass Weight Calculator: Weight of a Glass Pane, Laminated Glass or Double-Pane Unit

Find the weight of a glass pane, tabletop, shelf or window from its size and thickness: single, laminated or double/triple-pane, float, low-iron or borosilicate, with lb per sq ft and a thickness table.

How it works

weight = area × thickness × density × number of panes (+ area × interlayer thickness × 1,070 kg/m³ for laminated) · soda-lime glass ≈ 2,500 kg/m³ = 2.5 kg/m² per mm = 156 lb/ft³ ≈ 13 lb per sq ft per inch

Glass weight is its volume times its density. Ordinary window, mirror, shower and tabletop glass is soda-lime float glass at about 2,500 kg/m³, which makes the handy rule of 2.5 kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness, or about 13 lb per square foot for every inch (3.25 lb per sq ft for 1/4 in). Tempering does not change the weight, low-iron glass is almost the same, and borosilicate is about 11% lighter. Choose the construction to add up the panes: a laminated sheet is two plies plus a PVB interlayer (about 1,070 kg/m³), and a double- or triple-pane insulated unit is two or three panes, since the gas gap weighs almost nothing. The table shows the weight of your piece at every standard thickness, in inch sizes on the US view and millimetre sizes on the metric view. Unlike the metal weight calculator (steel and other metals) or the glass block calculator (block counts for a wall), this one is for flat glass. Note that US nominal thicknesses are often made slightly thinner (1/4 in glass is usually about 6 mm), so a real pane can weigh a few percent less than the nominal-inch figure; enter the measured thickness if you need precision.

Worked example

A 36 × 48 in pane of 1/4 in float glass has an area of 36 × 48 ÷ 144 = 12 sq ft (1.115 m²). At 6.35 mm × 2,500 kg/m³ = 15.88 kg/m², it weighs 1.115 × 15.88 = 17.70 kg, or 39.0 lb (3.25 lb per sq ft). As a double-pane unit with two 1/4 in panes, or as a single 1/2 in pane, the same size weighs twice as much: 78.0 lb.

Frequently asked questions

How much does glass weigh per square foot?

About 13 lb per square foot per inch of thickness: 1/8 in ≈ 1.6 lb, 3/16 in ≈ 2.4 lb, 1/4 in ≈ 3.3 lb, 3/8 in ≈ 4.9 lb, 1/2 in ≈ 6.5 lb and 3/4 in ≈ 9.8 lb per sq ft. In metric it is 2.5 kg/m² per mm, so 6 mm glass is 15 kg/m² and 10 mm is 25 kg/m².

Does tempered glass weigh more than regular glass?

No. Tempering is a heat treatment that changes the stress in the glass, not its density, so a tempered pane weighs the same as an annealed one of the same size and thickness.

How heavy is a double-pane window?

Add the weight of the glass panes: two 1/8 in panes come to about 3.3 lb per sq ft and two 1/4 in panes to about 6.5 lb per sq ft, plus a little for the spacer and sealant. The frame and sash are extra, often doubling the weight of a small vinyl window.

How much does a glass table top weigh?

A 36 in round top in 1/2 in glass has an area of 7.07 sq ft, so it weighs about 7.07 × 6.5 = 46 lb. A 3/8 in top of the same size weighs about 34.5 lb. Choose “Circle” and enter the diameter to check your own.

How much does laminated glass weigh?

The two glass plies plus the interlayer. A common 6.38 mm laminate (two 3 mm plies + 0.38 mm PVB) weighs about 15.4 kg/m² (3.2 lb/sq ft), and 10.76 mm (two 5 mm + 0.76 mm) about 25.8 kg/m².

Weights are estimates from nominal sizes. Large panes are heavy and break dangerously: plan lifting, supports and hardware with a margin and follow the manufacturer’s handling instructions.
