Goals Against Average (GAA) Calculator
Goalie GAA and save percentage for hockey, lacrosse or soccer from goals allowed, minutes played and shots faced, scaled to a 60- or 90-minute game.
How it works
GAA = goals allowed × game length ÷ minutes played; SV% = (shots − goals) ÷ shots
GAA normalises goals allowed to a full game so goalies with different ice time can be compared; empty-net goals are excluded in the NHL. It depends heavily on the team’s defence, which is why save percentage — the share of shots stopped — is the preferred measure of the goalie alone. Both together tell you whether a low GAA is the goalie or the skaters in front.
Worked example
58 goals in 1,500 minutes: 58 × 60 ÷ 1,500 = 2.32 GAA; 710 shots gives a .918 save percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Are overtime minutes included?
Yes — all minutes on the ice; shootout goals are not counted.
What is a good save percentage?
NHL average is about .905; .920+ is elite. In soccer, goalkeepers typically save 65–75% of shots on target.
