How it works

Cost per visit = monthly fee ÷ visits · Break-even visits = monthly fee ÷ drop-in price

A membership is a fixed monthly cost, so the more you go the less each visit costs. The break-even point is where the membership matches paying per visit: divide the monthly fee by the drop-in price. Below that many visits you are paying for a gym you barely use; above it, the membership is genuinely the cheaper option.

Worked example

A $45 monthly membership against a $15 drop-in breaks even at 45 ÷ 15 = 3 visits a month. Go 8 times and each visit costs $45 ÷ 8 = $5.63, saving 8 × $15 − $45 = $75 versus paying at the door.

Frequently asked questions

How many times should I go to make a membership worth it?

Divide the monthly fee by the drop-in price for your break-even count. Fewer visits than that and pay-as-you-go wins; more, and the membership saves money — plus the fixed cost can be a useful commitment device.

Does the joining fee change the break-even?

It raises the cost of the first month only, so it makes short memberships worse but barely affects a long-term one. Spread across a year, a $60 joining fee adds just $5 a month.

What if I stop going?

Then your cost per visit climbs every month you skip, because the fee keeps coming out whether you show up or not. Memberships punish inactivity in a way drop-in pricing never does.
