How it works

Total pieces = visitors × pieces each · Bags = ceil(total pieces ÷ pieces per bag) · Budget = bags × price per bag

Multiply your expected turnout by how many pieces you hand each visitor, then divide by the count in a bag and round up. Turnout is the hard part to guess: a busy suburban street can see 150–300 kids in the early evening, while a quiet block or apartment may see a couple dozen. It is better to buy one bag too many — leftovers keep — than to go dark early and turn latecomers away.

Worked example

Expecting 150 trick-or-treaters at 3 pieces each means 450 pieces. At 50 pieces per bag that is ceil(450 ÷ 50) = 9 bags, and at $5 a bag the candy costs $45 — about $0.30 per visitor.

Frequently asked questions

How much candy do I need for trick-or-treaters?

Estimate your turnout and multiply by the pieces you give each child (2 to 4 is typical). On a busy street plan for 150 or more visitors; on a quieter block, 30 to 60. Buying slightly extra avoids running out at the door.

How many trick-or-treaters should I expect?

It depends heavily on your location. Dense, family-heavy neighborhoods known for Halloween can draw hundreds; rural roads, apartments and blocks with few kids see far fewer. Ask neighbors what they saw last year for the best local estimate.

What if I run out of candy early?

Turn off the porch light — the universal signal that you are out — or set out a bowl with a "take one" note. To avoid it next year, track how many visitors actually came and how early they stopped, then adjust your bag count upward.
