Pumpkin Carving Time Calculator
Estimate how long carving your jack-o-lanterns will take from the number of pumpkins, design difficulty and how many people are helping.
How it works
Per pumpkin = carve time (simple 30 / medium 60 / intricate 120 min) + 15 min gutting · Elapsed = pumpkins × per pumpkin ÷ carvers
Each pumpkin takes about 15 minutes to cut open and scoop clean, then the carving itself ranges from roughly half an hour for a classic toothy face to two hours or more for an intricate stencil or portrait. Total hands-on work is that per-pumpkin time times the number of pumpkins; dividing by how many people are carving gives the wall-clock time, since people can work in parallel.
Worked example
Three medium pumpkins take 60 + 15 = 75 minutes each, or 3 × 75 = 225 minutes of work. With two people carving, the job finishes in about 225 ÷ 2 = 112 minutes, roughly 1h 52m.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to carve a pumpkin?
A simple face takes about 30 minutes of carving, a detailed design around an hour, and an intricate stencil or scene two hours or more. Add roughly 15 minutes per pumpkin for cutting the lid and scraping out the seeds and pulp.
Does having more people actually make it faster?
Yes, because pumpkins are carved independently — two people can work on two pumpkins at once. The calculator divides the total hands-on time by the number of carvers, though in practice one detailed pumpkin still takes its full time no matter how many helpers stand by.
How far ahead of Halloween should I carve?
A carved pumpkin typically looks good for only 3 to 5 days before it shrivels, so carve within a few days of Halloween. Keeping it cool and rubbing cut edges with petroleum jelly slows the drying.
