How it works

Human years = months ÷ typical lifespan in months × 80

Hamsters live only 2–3 years, so each month is worth roughly three human years. Syrians and Chinese hamsters live about 2–2.5 years, dwarf species around 2, and Roborovskis up to 3–3.5. A hamster over 18 months is a pensioner: expect thinner fur, slower wheel sessions and a need for easier-to-reach food.

Worked example

A 14-month-old Syrian: 14 ÷ 30 × 80 ≈ 37 human years.

Frequently asked questions

Why not a fixed “25 years per year” rule?

Because lifespans differ by species — a rule tuned to Syrians would make a 2-year-old Roborovski seem older than it is.

How can I tell an old hamster?

Greying fur, weight loss, less activity, cloudy eyes and longer sleeps are all normal ageing signs.
