Hamster Cage Size & Bedding Calculator (Syrian & Dwarf, Wheel Size, Litres of Substrate)

Check a hamster enclosure against modern minimums: unbroken floor area (≥ 5,000 cm² / 775 sq in for Syrians, 4,000 cm² for dwarfs; 100 × 50 cm recommended), bedding depth for burrowing (20–30 cm) converted to litres per fill and per month, the right wheel diameter and hide count, sand bath and food amounts, and the monthly cost — with common cages sized for comparison.

How it works

floor area = length × width (unbroken, single level) · minimums: Syrian 5,000 cm² (775 sq in), dwarfs 4,000 cm²; recommended 100 × 100 cm / 80 × 100 cm (≈ 8,000–10,000 cm²) · bedding litres = area × depth ÷ 1,000 (depth 20–30 cm, leave ≥ 15 cm above) · monthly bedding ≈ ⅓ of a fill · wheel: Syrian ≥ 28 cm, dwarf ≥ 20 cm

Modern hamster welfare standards start from the animal's natural life — kilometres of running each night and burrows a metre deep — so the enclosure is judged by unbroken floor area and by how deep the bedding can be, and most cages sold with a hamster fail both; the German and Dutch minimums that keepers now follow are several times the size of the classic wire cage. Bedding depth turns into surprising volumes of substrate, which sets the running cost, and the wheel must be large enough for a straight back, since the small wheels bundled with cages cause spinal problems. Food is a small line; space and substrate are the real budget.

Worked example

A 100 × 50 × 50 cm bin gives a Syrian hamster 5,000 cm² — exactly the minimum, half the recommended 10,000. Filled 25 cm deep (leaving 25 cm of clearance) it takes about 125 L of expanded paper bedding, of which roughly 44 L is replaced each month — around $15 a month for bedding, food, sand and chews — with a 28 cm wheel, three hides and a sand bath of about 300 cm². A standard 58 × 38 cm pet-store cage, at 2,200 cm², is less than half the minimum.

Frequently asked questions

Do multi-level cages count?

No — hamsters need continuous floor to run and dig; levels, tubes and platforms add enrichment but not to the minimum area. Measure the largest single unbroken floor, and remember that 25 cm of bedding eats most of a shallow cage's height.

How often should I clean the cage?

Spot-clean the toilet corner and food stashes every few days and replace a third of the bedding monthly, keeping some used bedding so the scent stays familiar — full clean-outs stress hamsters and destroy their burrows. Wash the sand bath weekly.
