How it works

CF% = CF ÷ (CF + CA) × 100 · Corsi = CF − CA

Corsi counts all unblocked and blocked shot attempts — shots on goal, missed shots and blocked shots — as a proxy for puck possession and territorial control. Corsi For % expresses your team’s share of the total attempts; above 50% means you are directing more pucks at the net than your opponent, which correlates with sustained zone time. Because attempts are far more frequent than goals, Corsi stabilises quickly and is a better short-run signal of which team is driving play than the volatile goal count.

Worked example

While a player is on the ice, the team generates 55 shot attempts and allows 45. CF% = 55 ÷ (55 + 45) × 100 = 55%, with a Corsi differential of +10 — a clear edge in shot-attempt share.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a Corsi event?

Every shot attempt: shots on goal, shots that miss the net, and shots that get blocked. Goals are shots on goal, so they are included too. It is deliberately broad to capture overall attempt volume rather than just shots the goalie faces.

What is a good Corsi For percentage?

Exactly 50% is break-even. Consistently posting 52% or higher marks a team or player that controls play; the best drive rates into the mid-to-high 50s. Sub-48% over a large sample suggests being territorially outplayed.

How does Corsi differ from Fenwick?

Fenwick uses the same idea but excludes blocked shots, counting only unblocked attempts. Corsi’s larger event pool makes it stabilise a bit faster, while Fenwick is thought to relate slightly more closely to scoring chances.
