Side-Out Percentage Calculator
Calculate side-out percentage — how often a team wins the point when receiving serve — the core efficiency metric that decides volleyball matches.
How it works
Side-out % = points won when receiving serve ÷ total reception plays × 100
Side-out percentage is the share of points a team wins while receiving serve — that is, how often it “sides out” and takes back the serve. Because the serving team has a slight edge in rally-scoring volleyball, a side-out rate above 50% means a team wins more receive points than it loses, and elite teams push past 60%. It is arguably the single most predictive team stat, since a strong side-out engine keeps a team from falling into long point-losing streaks.
Worked example
A team wins 18 of the 30 rallies in which the opponent served. Side-out % = 18 ÷ 30 × 100 = 60% — a level associated with consistently winning sets.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good side-out percentage?
Above 50% means a team wins the majority of its receive points, which is the break-even target. Strong club and college teams sit near 55–60%, and elite international sides can exceed 65% against comparable competition.
How is side-out different from point-scoring percentage?
Side-out percentage covers points won on reception (when the opponent serves); point-scoring or break-point percentage covers points won on your own serve. A complete picture needs both — dominating one but not the other still leaves a team vulnerable.
Why does side-out matter so much in rally scoring?
Since every rally scores a point, failing to side out hands the serving team consecutive points and momentum. A high side-out rate breaks that chain quickly, limiting scoring runs and keeping sets close or in your favour.
