How it works

Surplus = feast − maintenance · Walk hours = surplus ÷ walk burn/hr · Surplus ÷ 3,500 = lb

One big holiday meal rarely causes lasting weight gain — a single pound of fat is 3,500 surplus calories, more than most feasts. This calculator shows the true size of the surplus over your normal day and frames it as walking time or a next-day deficit, so a single indulgence stays in perspective. The real risk is a whole season of surplus days, not one dinner, so recovering the next day matters more than guilt.

Worked example

A 3,500 kcal feast against a 2,200 kcal maintenance is a 1,300 kcal surplus — about 4.6 hours of walking at 280 kcal/hr, or roughly 0.37 lb of fat-equivalent that a lighter next day easily offsets.

Frequently asked questions

Will one holiday meal make me gain weight?

Not meaningfully. A pound of fat requires about 3,500 surplus calories, and any next-day scale jump is mostly water and food weight from the sodium and carbs, not fat. Consistency across the season is what counts.

What is the best way to offset a feast?

A long walk the same evening and slightly lighter, protein-forward meals the next day. Trying to "burn it all off" in one workout is unrealistic; a small deficit spread over a day or two is easier and just as effective.

Why did the scale jump the morning after?

Large, salty, carb-heavy meals cause the body to retain water, which shows up as several pounds overnight. It clears within a few days and is not the same as gaining body fat.
