Home-Field Advantage Points Calculator
Add home-field advantage to a point spread and convert the adjusted margin into a home-team win probability.
How it works
Adjusted margin = pre-game edge + home advantage · Home win % = Φ(adjusted margin ÷ scoring std. deviation)
Home-field advantage is usually quoted as a number of points added to the host’s expected margin — historically around 2.5 to 3 points in the NFL, though it has shrunk in recent years. Converting that margin to a win probability uses a normal model of game outcomes: divide the expected margin by the typical standard deviation of scoring margins and read off the normal curve. A wider scoring spread (as in basketball) dilutes the effect of the same point edge.
Worked example
A home team that is a 1-point favourite on neutral ground, plus 2.5 points of home advantage, becomes a 3.5-point favourite. With an NFL scoring standard deviation of 13.5, that is Φ(3.5 ÷ 13.5) = Φ(0.26) ≈ 60% to win.
Frequently asked questions
How many points is home-field advantage worth?
It varies by sport and era. In the NFL it has historically been about 2.5–3 points; in the NBA a couple of points; in soccer it is often modelled as a fraction of a goal. Enter the value that fits your league.
Where does the standard deviation come from?
It is the spread of actual final margins around the expected margin — roughly 13.5 points in the NFL. A larger value means the same point edge produces a win probability closer to 50%.
Can the pre-game edge be negative?
Yes. Enter a negative edge if the visitor is the stronger team; home advantage is still added, and the calculator shows whether it is enough to flip the favourite.
