How it works

Expected = 1 ÷ (1 + 10^((opponent − you) ÷ 400)) · New rating = old + K × (actual − expected)

Elo compares two ratings, turns the 400-point-scaled gap into an expected score between 0 and 1, then nudges each rating toward the actual result. Beating a stronger opponent gains more than beating a weaker one, because the expected score was already high in the easy case. The K-factor sets how quickly ratings move — the winner gains exactly what the loser loses, so the system is zero-sum.

Worked example

Two 1500-rated teams each have an expected score of 0.5. If you win with K = 32, you gain 32 × (1 − 0.5) = 16 points to reach 1516, and your opponent drops to 1484.

Frequently asked questions

What K-factor should I use?

Common choices are 32 for casual or fast-moving ratings, 24 for club play and 16 for established elite players. A larger K makes ratings react faster but noisier.

Why did I gain so few points for beating a weaker team?

Because Elo already expected you to win, your expected score was near 1, so an actual win of 1 leaves little gap to reward. Upsets over stronger opponents move ratings the most.

How is this different from a plain Elo rating calculator?

This one applies a single match result and returns both teams’ updated ratings and the points exchanged, rather than only estimating win probability from the current ratings.
