How it works

Nominal rate = annual income ÷ (paid hours × weeks) · Real rate = annual income ÷ ((paid + unpaid hours) × weeks)

Your salary hides your true hourly worth because a job costs more hours than the paid ones — commuting, preparing and decompressing all count. Folding those unpaid hours in gives a "real" rate that is often meaningfully lower than the headline figure. That number is the right yardstick for time-versus-money trades: if a task you could outsource costs less per hour than your real rate, paying to skip it can be the rational choice.

Worked example

A $60,000 salary over 40 paid hours × 50 weeks = 2,000 hours is $30.00/hour nominally. Add 5 unpaid commute-and-prep hours a week and total hours become 45 × 50 = 2,250, so the real rate is 60,000 ÷ 2,250 ≈ $26.67/hour, or about $0.44 a minute.

Frequently asked questions

Why count unpaid hours?

A job’s real time cost includes commuting, getting ready and mandatory extras — hours you spend for work but are not paid for. Including them shows what each genuine hour of your working life earns.

How do I use this number?

It sets a threshold for outsourcing. If cleaning, yard work or a long detour to save money costs you more time than it is worth at your real rate, buying that time back is often smart.

Is my time only worth my wage?

No — leisure and family time can be worth far more than any wage. This figure measures the earnings value of work hours, which is one useful input, not the whole picture.
