Import Duty Calculator
Estimate the landed cost of imported goods — customs duty, VAT/GST and fees on top of product and shipping cost.
How it works
CIF = product value + shipping · duty = CIF × duty% · VAT/GST = (CIF + duty) × VAT% · landed cost = value + shipping + duty + VAT + other fees
Landed cost is the true all-in cost of getting imported goods to your door. Most customs regimes charge duty on the CIF value — the cost of the goods plus insurance and freight — using a rate set by the product’s HS (tariff) code. VAT or GST is then charged on top of that, on the CIF value plus the duty, so the tax compounds slightly. Add broker, customs-clearance and handling fees to get the total. Rates and the exact base vary by country — some tax on value only, some include shipping — so enter the figures that apply to your shipment and destination.
Worked example
$1,000 of goods plus $150 shipping gives a CIF value of $1,150. Duty at 5% is $57.50. VAT at 20% applies to $1,150 + $57.50 = $1,207.50, so VAT is $241.50. Adding $25 of broker fees, the total landed cost is 1,000 + 150 + 57.50 + 241.50 + 25 = $1,474.
Frequently asked questions
What value is duty charged on?
Most countries use the CIF value — the cost of the goods plus insurance and freight — as the base for customs duty. Some use the goods value alone (FOB). This calculator applies duty to CIF (value + shipping); check your destination’s rules, as it changes the total.
Is VAT charged on the duty too?
Usually yes. VAT or GST is typically levied on the CIF value plus the duty already added, so the two taxes compound a little. That’s why the effective tax on your goods is slightly more than simply duty% + VAT% added together.
Where do I find my duty rate?
Duty rates depend on the product’s HS (Harmonized System) tariff code and the destination country’s schedule, plus any trade agreements. Look up your HS code in the importing country’s customs tariff, or ask your freight forwarder or customs broker, then enter that rate here.
