IUD & Implant Expiration Calculator (When to Replace)

Find when your IUD or birth control implant expires — hormonal IUDs (52 mg, 19.5 mg, 13.5 mg levonorgestrel), copper IUD, etonogestrel or levonorgestrel implant — from the insertion date, with approved and extended-use durations.

How it works

replace-by date = insertion date + approved duration · levonorgestrel IUD 52 mg: 8 years · 19.5 mg: 5 years · 13.5 mg: 3 years · copper T380A: 10 years · etonogestrel implant: 3 years · levonorgestrel 2-rod implant: 5 years

Long-acting reversible contraceptives work for years, but each has an approved duration after which protection is no longer guaranteed. The 52 mg hormonal IUDs (Mirena, Liletta) are now FDA-approved for 8 years, Kyleena for 5 and Skyla/Jaydess for 3; the copper T380A IUD for 10 years (with evidence to 12); and the etonogestrel implant for 3 years, with studies suggesting it lasts longer. UK guidance lets a copper IUD inserted at 40+ stay until menopause, and a 52 mg hormonal IUD inserted at 45+ stay until 55. A new device can usually be placed at the same visit the old one is removed.

Worked example

A 52 mg levonorgestrel IUD (Mirena or Liletta) inserted on March 10, 2022 at age 30 is approved for 8 years, so it should be replaced by Sunday, March 10, 2030. A copper IUD inserted the same day would last until March 10, 2032.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Mirena IUD last?

Up to 8 years for pregnancy prevention (FDA approval updated in 2022). For heavy-period treatment it is approved for 5 years, and outside the US labels may still say 5–6 years.

How long does a copper IUD last?

The copper T380A (Paragard) is approved for 10 years, and studies show it remains effective for at least 12. If inserted at 40 or older, UK guidance says it can stay until menopause.

How long does the Nexplanon implant last?

It is approved for 3 years. Studies suggest it stays effective for up to 5 years, but rely on the approved duration unless your clinician advises otherwise.

What happens if I leave my IUD in too long?

It may stop preventing pregnancy reliably, and the hormonal ones may stop controlling bleeding. Use backup contraception and book a removal or replacement — it is not usually dangerous to your health.
