Menopause Age Estimate Calculator
Estimate your likely menopause age and when perimenopause may begin, based on family history and smoking — the strongest everyday predictors.
How it works
Estimate = mother’s menopause age − smoking adjustment (current −2 yrs, former −0.5 yr) · Perimenopause start ≈ estimate − 4 yrs
The average age of natural menopause is about 51, and a mother's age at menopause is the strongest ordinary predictor of a daughter's. Current smoking brings menopause forward by roughly one to two years by depleting the ovarian follicle pool faster. Perimenopause — the transition of changing cycles and symptoms — typically begins about four years before the final period. These are population averages: individual timing varies widely.
Worked example
A 45-year-old whose mother reached menopause at 51 and who does not smoke gets an estimate of 51, with perimenopause possibly from about age 47 and roughly 6 years until menopause.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average age of menopause?
Around 51 in most populations, with the normal range spanning roughly 45 to 55. Menopause is defined retrospectively as 12 consecutive months without a period.
How much does smoking matter?
Current smokers reach menopause on average about one to two years earlier than non-smokers. Stopping reduces the effect, which is why former smokers get a smaller adjustment here.
Can this tell me if I am in perimenopause?
No. Perimenopause is diagnosed from symptoms and cycle changes, not a formula. If you have irregular cycles, hot flushes or sleep changes in your 40s, discuss them with a clinician.
