PMS Symptom Window Calculator
Estimate the days each cycle when PMS symptoms are most likely — the late-luteal window before your next period — from your last period date and cycle length.
How it works
Next period = last period + cycle length · PMS window = the last N days before the next period (late luteal phase)
Premenstrual symptoms cluster in the late luteal phase, after ovulation and before menstruation, when progesterone falls. This calculator projects your next period by adding the cycle length to your last start date, then marks the days just before it. Tracking the window helps separate a predictable premenstrual pattern from symptoms that persist through the cycle, which is worth discussing with a clinician.
Worked example
With a last period on Sep 1 and a 28-day cycle, the next period is estimated for Sep 29. A 5-day lead time puts the PMS window at Sep 24–28 — cycle days 24 through 28.
Frequently asked questions
How many days before a period does PMS start?
Commonly 4 to 7 days, but it ranges from 1 to about 11. Symptoms should ease within a few days of the period starting; use your own history to set the lead time.
What is the difference between PMS and PMDD?
PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is a severe form with marked mood symptoms that disrupt daily life. If symptoms are severe or include depression, track them across cycles and seek medical advice — this tool only estimates timing.
Why does the window move each month?
It is anchored to your next period, which shifts with cycle length. Longer or irregular cycles move the whole window later; logging several cycles improves the estimate.
