How it works

Area = (d₁ · d₂) / 2 · Perimeter = 2(a + b), where a and b are the two pairs of adjacent equal sides

A kite has two pairs of adjacent equal sides, and its diagonals meet at right angles. Because of that perpendicular crossing, the area is half the product of the diagonals — the same formula as a rhombus, which is just a special kite with all sides equal. The perimeter needs the two distinct side lengths, since a kite has two of each: 2(a + b).

Worked example

For diagonals of 6 and 8 with sides 4 and 6: area = (6 · 8) / 2 = 24 units²; perimeter = 2(4 + 6) = 20 units.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the kite area formula the same as the rhombus one?

Both shapes have perpendicular diagonals, and any quadrilateral with perpendicular diagonals has area = (d₁ · d₂) / 2. A rhombus is simply a kite whose four sides are all equal.

Do I need the side lengths to get the area?

No — the area depends only on the two diagonals. The side lengths are needed only for the perimeter, so leave them at zero if you just want the area.
