Land Area (Acres) Calculator
Convert a field’s length and width in feet into acres, square feet, hectares and square meters for planning and mapping.
How it works
Square feet = length × width · Acres = square feet ÷ 43,560 · Hectares = acres × 0.4047
An acre is defined as 43,560 square feet — historically the area a yoke of oxen could plow in a day — so any rectangular parcel’s acreage is just its length times width in feet divided by that constant. The tool also reports hectares and square meters for metric mapping. For irregular fields, split the shape into rectangles and triangles, total their square footage, then convert.
Worked example
A square field 660 ft on each side is 660 × 660 = 435,600 square feet. Dividing by 43,560 gives exactly 10 acres, which equals about 4.05 hectares or 40,469 square meters.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 square feet. Handy reference points: a square acre is about 208.7 ft on a side, and a strip one chain (66 ft) wide by one furlong (660 ft) long is exactly one acre — the origin of the 66 × 660 layout.
How do I measure an irregular parcel?
Break it into rectangles and right triangles, compute each piece’s area (length × width, or ½ × base × height), add them up in square feet, then divide by 43,560. For complex boundaries, GPS mapping or a plat with surveyed coordinates is more accurate than hand geometry.
How do acres relate to hectares?
One acre is about 0.4047 hectares, and one hectare (10,000 m²) is about 2.471 acres. Multiply acres by 0.4047 for hectares, or hectares by 2.471 for acres.
