How it works

Seeds/acre = (43,560 × 144) ÷ (row in × spacing in) · Plants/acre = seeds/acre × emergence %

Each plant occupies a rectangle of ground set by the row width and the in-row spacing, so dividing the square inches in an acre by that rectangle gives seeds dropped per acre. Multiplying by an emergence factor accounts for seeds that never make a plant. It is the fastest way to check that your planter is set to the population your seeding plan calls for.

Worked example

With 30-inch rows and a seed every 6.5 inches, each seed gets 30 × 6.5 = 195 sq in. An acre holds 43,560 × 144 = 6,272,640 sq in, so 6,272,640 ÷ 195 ≈ 32,167 seeds/acre. At 95% emergence, roughly 30,559 plants/acre stand.

Frequently asked questions

Is this seeds planted or plants standing?

Both. The calculator first shows seeds dropped per acre from your spacing, then applies the emergence percent to estimate the final plant stand. Set emergence to 100% if you want the raw seed drop.

What emergence percent should I use?

Field emergence for row crops in good conditions is commonly 90–98%. Cold, wet, crusted or cloddy seedbeds can drop it well below that, so scout early-season stands and adjust the figure to what you actually observe.

How do I convert this to a seeding rate?

Multiply your target plants per acre by the reciprocal of emergence to get seeds needed, then divide by seeds per pound to get pounds per acre — the seeding rate calculator does that step.
