Lawn Care Cost Calculator: Mow It Yourself or Hire a Service?
Compare mowing your own lawn with hiring a lawn service: season cost each way, mower and upkeep spread over its life, treatments, the hours you spend, what mowing yourself pays per hour, and 2026 price ranges by lawn size.
How it works
DIY season = fuel & upkeep per mow × mows + mower price ÷ mower life + yearly service + DIY products · Service season = price per mow × mows + pro treatments · Saving = service − DIY · Hours = mows × minutes per mow ÷ 60 · Pay per hour = saving ÷ hours
Each side of the comparison is a season total. Doing it yourself costs the fuel, oil and wear of every mow, plus, if you choose, the mower’s price spread over the years it lasts, a yearly tune-up and any fertilizer or weed control you apply yourself. A service costs its price per visit times the number of visits, plus any treatment program you buy from it. The cash saving alone hides the real trade: your time. The calculator divides the saving by the hours you spend, which tells you what mowing pays you per hour. If you enter a value for your time, it adds those hours to the DIY cost and says which option is cheaper overall. Typical prices come from two 2026 surveys: Lawn Love puts an average mowing visit at $43–$69, and Jobber’s pricing chart runs from $25–$60 for a quarter acre to $150–$200 for an acre. Prices vary widely by region, grass type, slope and what the visit includes, so a written quote is the number to use.
Worked example
A 5,000 sq ft lawn mowed 26 times a season, with $3 of fuel and upkeep per mow: DIY costs 3 × 26 = $78. A service at $45 a visit costs 45 × 26 = $1,170. Mowing yourself saves 1,170 − 78 = $1,092. At 60 minutes a mow you spend 26 hours, so mowing pays you 1,092 ÷ 26 = $42.00 per hour. The service price works out to $9.00 per 1,000 sq ft per mow, and a lawn under a quarter acre typically costs $25–$60 a visit.
