How it works
Minimum = base (by connection type) + large-hub buffer + recheck buffer · Buffer = layover − minimum
Airlines publish a Minimum Connection Time for every airport, but it is a floor, not a comfortable target — it assumes an on-time arrival and no queues. A safe layover adds buffer for the things that actually cause missed connections: a sprawling hub where gates are a train ride apart, and any point where you must collect and recheck bags or clear immigration and security again. A negative buffer here does not mean you will miss the flight, but it does mean a single delay likely will make you miss it.
Worked example
A 90-minute domestic-to-domestic connection at a large hub needs 45 + 30 = 75 minutes, leaving a +15-minute buffer — tight but workable. Add an international recheck and the minimum jumps to 105 minutes, turning the same layover into a 15-minute shortfall.
Frequently asked questions
Is the airline's minimum connection time enough?
It is the shortest connection an airline will legally sell, assuming everything runs on time. For peace of mind, especially with checked bags or at big hubs, aim well above it — this calculator adds those buffers for you.
What if my flights are on separate tickets?
Give yourself far more time. On separate tickets your bags are not checked through and the second airline owes you nothing if the first is late, so you must collect luggage, re-check in, and clear security from scratch.
Do I need to recheck bags on an international connection?
Often yes when entering a country — many require you to claim bags, clear customs, and recheck even if just connecting. Some connections are checked through; confirm with your airline, and select the recheck option here if in doubt.
