Travel Budget Per Day Calculator: Daily Spend, Trip Total and Cost per Traveler
Build a realistic daily travel budget from lodging, food, activities, local transport and extras, add flights and a buffer, and see the cost per day, for the whole trip and per traveler, with nights counted correctly.
How it works
Nights = days (or days − 1) · Ground cost = lodging × nights + (food + activities + transport + misc) × days [× travelers if amounts are per person] · Buffer = buffer % × (ground cost + one-time costs) · Total = ground cost + one-time costs + buffer · Budget per day = (ground cost + its buffer) ÷ days · Per traveler = total ÷ travelers
A daily travel budget is the sum of what you expect to spend on a typical day, multiplied by the days on the ground. Building it bottom-up is more reliable than picking a round number, because it makes you price lodging and food separately, the two lines that dominate most trips. Lodging is entered per night for the whole room or rental. The other daily lines can be totals for the group or amounts for each traveler (choose which), so the calculator works for a solo trip, a couple or a group. Flights, travel insurance, visas and airport transfers are one-time costs for the whole trip: they are kept out of the per-day budget, so it stays useful for comparing destinations, and added to the trip total. The buffer percentage is applied to everything, including the one-time costs, to absorb a surprise taxi, a tour you decide on at the last minute or a currency swing. By default the calculator counts one night of lodging per day, which is the conservative choice. A 7-day trip usually has 6 nights; switch Nights of lodging under More options to count one fewer.
Worked example
With $90 lodging, $45 food, $30 activities, $15 local transport and $20 misc, a day costs 90 + 45 + 30 + 15 + 20 = $200. Over a 7-day trip that is $90 × 7 nights = $630 of lodging plus $110 × 7 days = $770 of other costs, $1,400 in total before flights. Lodging is $90 ÷ $200 = 45% of the day. Adding $800 of flights and a 10% buffer would make the total ($1,400 + $800) × 1.10 = $2,420.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I budget per day for travel?
Add up a realistic day: one night of lodging, three meals, the activities you plan, local transport and a little for extras. As a reference point, Hostelz puts a social backpacker in Spain at about $67 a day (hostel $18, food $17, activities $17, transport $9, extras $6), while a mid-range hotel trip in an expensive city can cost several times that. Price your own destination line by line for the best estimate.
Should airfare go in the daily budget?
No. Flights are a one-time cost for the whole trip, so enter them as one-time costs. They are added to the trip total but kept out of the per-day figure, which stays useful for comparing destinations. The all-in cost per day shows the total including flights.
How big should the buffer be?
A buffer of 10–15% is a common rule. It absorbs surprises like a spontaneous tour, an expensive airport transfer or a currency swing without reworking the whole budget. Longer or more remote trips justify the higher end.
Is lodging per night the same as per day?
Not quite. You usually pay for one fewer night than you have days: a 7-day trip is often 6 nights. The calculator counts a night for every day by default as a conservative figure; choose “One less than days” under More options for the exact night count.
How do I budget for a group trip?
Enter the number of travelers, enter lodging for the room or rental, and choose whether the food and activity amounts are for the whole group or for each traveler. The calculator shows the group total and the cost per traveler.
