How it works

Still needed = goal − saved × (1 + r)^months · Monthly = need × r ÷ [ (1 + r)^months − 1 ], r = APY ÷ 12

This backs into the deposit that lands you exactly on your goal by the travel date. Money you have already saved keeps earning interest until the trip, so it is grown forward first and subtracted from the target. Whatever remains is then spread across the months left, with interest reducing the required deposit slightly. If your existing savings already cover the goal, the required monthly amount is zero.

Worked example

For a $4,000 trip 10 months away with $500 already saved at 3% APY, the $500 grows to about $513, leaving roughly $3,487 to fund. Spread over 10 months with interest, that is about $344 a month — close to $79 a week.

Frequently asked questions

What if I have already saved enough?

When your current savings, grown with interest, already meet or exceed the trip cost, the calculator shows a $0 monthly deposit — you are on track without adding more.

Does the interest rate change my monthly amount much?

Over the short horizons typical of a trip fund, interest trims the required deposit only slightly. It matters more for larger goals saved over several years.

Should I keep vacation savings separate?

A dedicated high-yield savings account earmarked for the trip helps you avoid spending the money and lets you track progress against the goal cleanly.
